ATM link layer controllers are commonly know as SARs (segmentation and reassembly controllers). These controllers send or receive ATM 53-byte cells. The ATM cells are processed via ATM adaption layer (AAL) corresponding to a quality-of-service (QoS) established at network connection. Voice, video or data are mapped to an adaption layer for delay-sensitive characteristics of the data.
